Ecos Millennium Environmental Centre
Ecos Millennium Environmental Centre
The Ecos Millennium Environmental Centre is a unique project in Ireland that opened on 7th August 2000. Ecos is set in a 150-acre Country Park, which has been created from previously disused land that is the River Braid flood plain. This provides a public park that will continue to develop as around 80,000 tree saplings of native provenance grow into a native woodland throughout which there is a 5 mile network of walks and trails.Annually, ecos hosts 40 thousand visitors.
As a visitor centre Ecos is a family destination where a range of exciting interactive displays provide the opportunity to explore today’s environmental issues in a fun and entertaining way. Visitors see at first hand how Ecos generates power using wood, wind and sun - Ecos has Ireland's largest array of photovoltaic and solar water heating panels. We show how we manage our waste water using a reed-bed filtration system.
Outdoors there are two play areas for children, opportunities for pond-dipping, model boat sailing. During the summer season you can hire electric bicycles to explore the surrounding Country Park or relax in our Coffee shop. There is also an eco-friendly plant nursery and organic market garden.
Within the main Ecos building office space is let to outside organisations from both the public and private sectors that appreciate the benefit of being based in a sustainable environment. The centre also houses a conferencing facility that is popular among private and public sector organisations.
By interpreting the issue of environmental sustainability in such an inspired fashion, Ecos is successfully raising awareness among the 40,000 visitors we receive each year of the importance of being environmentally sustainable. Come and explore for yourself!
